Ahead of elections in five states, the Union Cabinet today cleared a proposal to fill pending vacancies in Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe categories in the central government, a move that will benefit around 50,000 people.

SC notice to center on extending reservation to Dalit converts.

The issue of reservation benefits for Dalits converted to Christianity and Islam as also Parsis and Jains on Wednesday reached the Supreme Court which sought a response from the Centre on a PIL accusing it of scuttling the recommendations of Rangnath Misra Commission in this regard.

Lohardaga-Ranchi train robbed by armed gang.

The robbery took place soon after the passenger train left Narkopi station. The robbers made their escape near Argora on the outskirts of the capital. Eyewitnesses said that the gang boarded the train at Lohardaga and occupied the luggage space. They pretended to have fallen asleep, but soon after the train left Narkopi, they started firing in the air and asked the passengers to hand over their belongings.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday admitted there had been a  "systemic failure" in giving tribals a stake in modern economic processes and emphasised that "equitable growth" was not possible without guaranteeing legitimate rights of these marginalised and isolated sections of society.

The Supreme Court, while partly upholding the Kerela Restrication on Transfer by and Restrication of Land to the Scheduled Tribes Act 1999, has said the legislation is more beneficial to the triibal  people than the 1975 law that was repealed..
